Thanks to a couple of people who commented on yesterday's post for pointing out that Hebrews was written to the Jewish people. I was sort of coming to that conclusion when they were listing OT characters and stating how much better Jesus is than them, more of that today.

So, basically a whole book of the bible is dedicated to 'my religion is better than yours' (or my covenant is more faultless than yours) directed at the Jews. From the outside this all seems a bit petty.

A bit of 'the sacrifice in my religion is superior to the ones in yours' (Jesus' blood versus the blood of goats and sheep).

Also, the punishment for rejecting the OT laws was merely death, having contempt for Jesus and insulting the Holy Spirit will lead to a terrifying ordeal at the hands of a vengeful God.

Just thought I might comment on your perception of Hebrews. I can understand how you see the comparisons made between Judaism and Christianity as a "holier than thou" attitude on the Christians' part. However, I think that implying that they are judgmental is unfounded. In fact, I see Hebrews as compassionate. For truly, if Christians believe that those who follow the old Jewish traditions will face eternal condemnation, they would be hateful if they did not express their opinions. If Hebrews gave the impression that Christians believed differently than Jews but "it's all good", then it would appear that Christians don't give a crap if Jews go to hell. I think this would be the much greater offense. Just a thought.

Same guy who commented from your 1st Corinthian readings, but I continue to wonder why you post your readings online in the manner that you do? I realize that it's a free country, and you have every right to interpret the Bible in any fashion; but, what are hoping to get out of this? I ask knowing that your goal is to read the Bible within a year, and that these are 'thoughts of a non-believer,' but stop trying to be so licentious and narrow minded (key word: trying). You have people commenting on your site day in, day out trying to guide you. But you still write ignorant statements.

I hope that others don't read your posts and follow your unbelief, especially since the blind cannot lead the blind, but instead, knowing that Iron sharpens Iron. You're trying to run before you crawl. Intertwine readings with help, even if it's praying. I'm sure you pray, even if you don't like to admit it, ah heck, I'll be praying for you still. Even if I don't know you... I have an unceasing anguish in my heart when brothers like you misinterpret things so easy to understand.

If you actually READ Hebrews, specifically chapter twelve, you'll so that it really isn't a "holier than thou" attitude. It's saying that if God can do it for them, he can do it for US TOO.

Hebrews is not a book dedicated to "my religion is better than yours". Hebrews is a book that explains the OT and its prophecies so that Jewish believers ( most Jewish people knew their scripture well) can see that Jesus is the promised Messiah and that the sacrifices of the old were temporary until the messiah was sent. Not "holier than thou", just an explanation of our faith in Jesus. May God Bless you.

This. ^^

Religion is all about what man has to do, to become right with God. True Christianity is about what God has already done, to make man right with Himself.
