Saul wants to talk to Samuel so gets a mystic woman to either raise him from the dead or possibly talk to his spirit. The way it is written sounds like she's a medium rather than a necromancer, as Saul asks her what she can see rather than seeing the reanimated corpse of Samuel in front of him and from her description he perceives that it is Samuel. But a lot of people seem to think these verses are depicting someone being raised from the dead so who knows!

David's wives are kidnapped by a group of people that everyone is always wiping out, but they always come back for more genocide. David leaves 400 of them alive when he goes to get his wives back.

Saul and his sons (even Jonathan who was a pretty OK guy in comparison to most biblical figures, it's a low bar though) are killed by the Philistines, God's wrath finally caught up with Saul I guess, that was a slow burning revenge in comparison to some of God's previous smitings.

Samuel dies, strange considering this is only the first book of Samuel!

David continues his rampage of random slaughtering (at times including women and children), but has enough time to pick up two more wives, one of which is the widow of a man David was going to kill but who instead died of a heart of stone (as you do), and spare Saul's life again.

More of David's attempts to escape Saul's attempts to kill him. This involves lying to a priest to gain food, shelter & a weapon (directly leading to the death of 85 priests when Saul catches up and takes offence at not being told where David had been) and hiding for a while with his 'good friend' Jonathan who finally reappears.

David then makes peace with Saul (after a small slaughter of invading Philistines) by sparing him when he could have easily killed him and asks that the favour be returned. Saul agrees that he was wrong to want David dead and goes home.

Saul's son Jonathan loves David and this leads to a very touching forbidden relationship between the two men (despite David marrying one of Saul's daughters in exchange for 200 enemy foreskins). Jonathan does his best to keep David safe as Saul wants him killed for being more popular with the people than himself. Saul finds out about their affair and so gains another reason to want David dead.

I've started to see the similarities between this part of the bible and that short lived TV show, Kings, which was about a modern but very different America and based more heavily on The Book of Samuel (also known as The Book of the Kings) than I realised. It included a war hero loved by the people called David and a king who hates his popularity. Also the king's son was gay and his daughter was enamoured with David. It was cancelled before very much happened although David was prophesied to become king eventually.

Saul disappoints God further, by being merciful and leaving some people (& animals) alive amongst a group they were ordered to kill (men, women, children & animals) because they were mean to the Israelites a few hundred years ago.

David slays Goliath, the champion of the Philistines who stands at a physically impossible 10 feet tall and dies from having a few stones thrown at him. God likes David, he wants him to replace the disappointment.

Saul is not a particularly competent king, and does some of the God worshipping stuff wrong so God has another king lined up to replace him. But for now Saul presides over a large slaughter of Philistines and wants his own son to die for eating a bit of honey after the people were told not to eat until they'd won the battle. The people rescue his son and Saul carries on being king.

Samuel finds a candidate for king, a man named Saul who is taller than everyone else so is obviously a natural to be elevated above them all. His first acts are dismembering a couple of oxen and slaughtering some people so that everyone respects him as their king, because some of them didn't like him and wouldn't send him any presents.

The Philistines manage to come into possession of the Ark of Covenant as the Israelites took it into battle with them. Over 50,000 Philistines were then slaughtered by God for looking at the Ark. All I can think of is this:

The Israelites then go on to demand that a king is put in place to rule over them, because all the other people have a king and they feel left out. They still want one after Samuel tells them that a king would take all their stuff and be mean.

Right back into a typical bible story, a previously barren woman is 'remembered by the Lord' and bares a son, who'll be important in years to come. This time it is Samuel, and God talks to him as a child about all the terrible things he's planning to do to some priests (and their descendants) who've been scamming the people by stealing offerings.
