Jesus carries his own cross to the place he is crucified in this version of the story. There is also a debate about what should have been written on the mocking sign placed above him that called him The King of Jews (in three languages apparently!).

Mary was a very popular name in Jesus' time, almost every woman seems to be called that.

One of the disciples will only believe the others really saw Jesus after his death if he sees the wounds from the nails in his hands and gets to put his fingers in them (ick).

The author of this book doesn't bother to record the details of miracles that Jesus performed in front of the disciples (doesn't that make him sound like some sort of after dinner magic act?) and also says that he did far too many things to be recorded in just one book.

There are several references throughout John to a disciple who Jesus loved, who never seems to be named, but I thought he loved all the disciples? What's different about this particular one?

Jesus keeps talking about sending a spirit guide to prove the world wrong about sin, righteousness and judgement. He tells his disciples that they should be happy that he's leaving them because then he can send them this spirit. None of the disciples know what he's going on about.

Jesus prays for the disciples, asking God to keep them safe as they are not part of the world and the world hates them, who's fault is that?

Jesus washes the disciples feet to teach them something about humility, and apparently they only need their feet washed to be clean.

Nothing much else that hasn't already been said.

I remember learning the story of Lazarus at school, we had to illustrate it and I recall drawing the moment when some men roll the stone from the tomb entrance and smell the four day old corpse inside. I don't remember knowing why we were taught this story though.

There seems to be more justification for Judas' betrayal in this book, we are told he was a thief and used to steal from the money box, so his greed would easily lead him to take money for betraying Jesus.

Jesus meets a man who was born blind and is asked whether he or his parents committed a sin that caused the blindness, which is a grotesque idea in itself, but then Jesus really tops anything the disciples were thinking. Jesus says that he was born blind so that the acts of God may be revealed through what happens to him, God needs to make random people suffer so he can prove how great he is?

Jesus has an argument with the Jewish leaders and they try to stone him and arrest him but he evades them and goes to hang out with some people who believe in him instead.

Crowds of people argue with each other about whether Jesus is Christ or not, some of them say he's not from the right place, others beleive his miracles, and some want to arrest him but don't lay a hand on him because it's 'not his time'.

Jesus insults a lot of people, no wonder they want to arrest him.

Jesus goes to a pool that is supposed to heal people when the water is stirred up, but the people are lying about on the walkways waiting for the water to move so Jesus heals one of them and then slips away. I'm sure he could've easily healed the lot of them.

A bunch of Jesus' disciples quit following him because he told some people that they had to eat his flesh and drink his blood to be saved, they are offended so go home, all except for the core twelve.

This guy Nicodemus must be the first person to have had the natural reaction to being told you have to be born again to get into heaven, um, how? Which reminds me of that joke, "If you're born again do you have two belly buttons?". Jesus says that you have to be born of water and spirit to enter the kingdom of God, sounds easier than what Nicodemus was imagining.

So, God loved the world so much he gave his Son, but only so that the people who believe in him can be saved, in fact those who don't believe are condemned. This God guy sure is loving.

Jesus pulls off a trick that is the bread and butter of every so called psychic's act, telling someone he just met details about their life that he couldn't possibly know. He tells a woman that she's had five husbands and is currently living with man she's not married to.

This books starts with a grand introduction and then appears to be about to tell Jesus' story from John the Baptist's point of view but instead John drops out when he tells his disciples about Jesus and they decide to follow Jesus instead.

Here's the first reference I've seen to Jesus turning water into wine, it wasn't mentioned in the previous gospels.
