Judges has been a pretty grim read, but these last three chapters really up the revulsion.

* A man gives his concubine to a mob and they rape her until she dies. He then cuts her body into 12 parts and sends a part to each tribe of Israel. Which is awful enough.

* They come and ask him why he sent them body parts and he explains, so the tribe that the mob came from (the Benjaminites) is then slaughtered (not without losses for the other tribes though) leaving just 600 men. What the mob did was awful, but the reaction is ridiculously over the top as women and children are included in the slaughter.

* Noone wants to give these 600 men any women to marry, but they can't let a tribe die out so find some virgins in a city of Israel who didn't send any men to join in the slaughter. So everyone is killed expect the 400 virgin women. And then to make up the numbers the rest of the Benjaminites have to kidnap girls from the city of Shiloh.

The excuse for everything that has occurred in Judges seems to be this:

In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

Samson's story ends as quickly as it began, he is finally captured by those he would've killed because he tells Delilah that his hair is his strength so she cuts it off. He then kills himself and 3000 others when he brings down the house around them, I guess he still had some of his strength and he was possibly the first religiously motivated suicide slaughterer.

The Israelites are still finding and slaughtering anyone not following their rules.

Samson is born (after a weird deal his parents make with an angel) and then goes and slaughters large numbers of people and wild animals with either his bare hands or just anything he found lying about. It's OK though, he's blessed by the Lord and goes on these killing sprees when the Lord's spirit 'comes upon' him. I think that that excuse is overused.

Fourth round of the children of Israel running to worship other gods as soon as they get a chance. This time God sells them into slavery and then says he won't free them again because they keep forgetting him.

* But God decides to deliver some people into the hands of the Israelites so they can get some more land. And even though God was already helping them kill lots of people, Jephthah vows that if God helps them win against some other people he'll kill the first thing that comes out his house when he gets home. So his virgin daughter (and only child) has to die and God does nothing to stop the sacrifice.

Gideon dies, the people go worship some other gods (the repeating pattern in Judges repeats again) and all 70 of his children are slaughtered by their cousin.

* Abimelech, Gideon's nephew, is a nastier man than his uncle, and he tries to cover up the fact that a woman killed him by getting his armour bearer to finish him off with a sword before he dies from his massive head trauma. The fact that this event is in the bible just shows that his attempt was a failure.

Another round of the Israelites getting sold into slavery for forgetting God's rules, and this time when God decides to relent they fight and beat a massive army of many thousand with just 300. That sounds familiar...

* Is this Gideon guy the same Gideon that those bible people named themselves after? Because he's such a model of tolerance. He destroys an altar to the God of the people oppressing the Israelites and demands that God prove himself in several bizarre ways.

God dizzily alternates between furious wrath (selling his people into slavery in anger) at his rules not being followed and helping them free themselves again (with much bloodshed). They must be so happy to be his chosen people.

* A rather nasty murder, this woman Deborah hides a battle weary man in her tent and then kills him by driving tent pegs into his head while he sleeps.

An appropriate video I encountered today:

Repetition of the conquerings we've been told about before.

* God sends an Angel to berate the Israelites for letting too many other peoples live and for living with them in peace. God does not tolerate toleration.

* Apparently a new generation of Israelites aren't being taught about God's rules and what he's done for them, so they all go and worship other gods and whatever he does to try to get them to come back to follow him doesn't really work too well.
