Saul disappoints God further, by being merciful and leaving some people (& animals) alive amongst a group they were ordered to kill (men, women, children & animals) because they were mean to the Israelites a few hundred years ago.

David slays Goliath, the champion of the Philistines who stands at a physically impossible 10 feet tall and dies from having a few stones thrown at him. God likes David, he wants him to replace the disappointment.
