Saul is not a particularly competent king, and does some of the God worshipping stuff wrong so God has another king lined up to replace him. But for now Saul presides over a large slaughter of Philistines and wants his own son to die for eating a bit of honey after the people were told not to eat until they'd won the battle. The people rescue his son and Saul carries on being king.
