God moves into the house that Solomon built him and then so many animals are sacrificed that they can't be counted. God then chats with Solomon to remind him of the penalties for disobedience.
Hey - cool blog concept. Very curious how it goes for you.
I'm going through a reading plan that is currently hitting Kings (in addition to others) - I'm curious what your thoughts are on the whole "forced labor" bit - how Solomon made most non-Israelites in the area forced labor workers. Isn't that what they Israelites were in Egypt? Why was it ok for him to do that to other people? Just one more thing that I find a hard time understanding/relating to in the OT (like condoned concubines, why war/pillaging was somehow ok, etc).
I don't remember specifically noticing this, unless you mean all the work he's had done to build a house for God and one for himself? But of course, forced labour is never a good thing and there has been a lot of slavery in the bible up to this point which God doesn't seem to have any issues with.
Good questions Wolf. First rule of reading the Bible... just because it happens doesnt mean God wants it to happen. God created Adam and Eve (humanity) to love Him, which requires we have a choice. The Israelites choose to have a king, against God's warnings. He told them that a king would enslave and tax them and more, but they still wanted a king. Here we see the fruit of their choice. Same with concubines and other issues. War is a result of rebellion and God uses it to keep the Israelites idolatry in check.
