Part of the fun of reading through the bible is piecing it all together. This may seem like just a lineage report and it was important for the lineages, I'm sure, until the temple was destroyed in 70 AD and all the info connecting the lineages was lost....but, it's much more than that.
If you can imagine...God is pretty big on detail. The complexity of the universe, our teeny tiny planet and all of the fun creation that He added for our enjoyment is complex enough...but, the amazing thing is that the bible says that before God even created the earth that He called each of us by name. So...even though the names may seem insignificant to us....the fact that they are even in this book mean that they are significant to God. Kind of like how it may seem like our name would be too insignificant to be put into a book...but our name is hugely significant to at least a few people on earth. Oh...and add to that one more biggy. God is really into books and names. For instance...as you read on...you will find that He has names written in the Book of Life. And He even erases Names from that Book. He even has a book that records everything that we do and say and accomplish while we are here on this planet because our responsibilities, rewards and/or punishment will be based on the accurate detailing of our stewardship of how much or how little we were given while on earth.
So...yeah....it may seem like just a lineage...but maybe it's a good reminder of the fact that a book about you is being written every second of every day.
