My reading plan is splitting up the chapters of Job in a way that makes it harder to follow. But even without that I can never remember if Job or one of his friends is talking due to the sheer length of their complicated speeches.

Job has concluded that wisdom comes from God, or at least it is wise to fear God and reject evil. I feel sorry for anyone who feels they are better off living in fear of a deity.

"Ya gotta SOIVE sumbuddy", sang Dylan.

Here's the fun part. God is mighty. Really, really mighty. So you better not piss him off. And the way not to piss him off is to come to this building every week and give money to this man standing up front...

I've never understood the "fear of God" thing making you do things or not do things, to appease someone/thing you're afraid of.

I think of the word "fear" as something other than the kind of fear you seem to take it as. Suppose you have a father who tells you, as a child, not to run out into the street, and says you'll be punished if you disobey. In that case, it's not exactly a bad thing to "fear" your father. Except you don't have to actually be afraid of him. If you know that he is trying to protect you from getting hurt, you can obey him without actually be afraid of him. You see the wisdom in "fearing" him, in the sense that you heed his warnings, because he has your best interests in mind.

I see nothing different in the God of the Bible. He tells men to refrain from certain activities that do indeed cause pain and regret. He tells them to love their wives and kids. He not only warns of future punishment for the wicked, but you can actually see in the world the present pain and regret that their sin causes. So you know he isn't making rules just to be a jerk.
