Amos 6-9

God is not impressed with the rich people in Israel, he says that they are the ones bringing disaster on everyone else but are too comfortable to do anything about it.

God shows Amos some visions and Amos is shocked and begs him not to do those things, and God says he won't but he will punish Israel.

Amos says he's not a prophet by trade, were there really people who were trained to be prophets? That seems to go against the whole God just picking someone to have visions thing, I guess these professional prophets weren't true ones.

God is threatening to bring natural occurrences like an earthquake and an eclipse as well as no more divine revelations, that'll be a real loss I'm sure.

I've often thought of God's miracles as miracles of timing. Yeah, it may have happened anyway in the natural course of things - but the timing was pretty darned good.

The fact a prophet (not the ones doing it as a career because their Daddy and their Daddy's Daddy did it, but those picked-out-by-God) can say, through God's direction, that something is going to happen at such-and-such time/place - and then it does - reveals how God is in control. He knows what's going to happen, He makes it known, and voila.

Not something I can do, at least.

But if you made lots and lots of predictions or gathered the predictions of lots of people and then just selected the correct ones and only showed those to other people years later then it would appear impressive on the surface but really isn't. That's if the apparently prophesied events even happened at all of course.
