Nehemiah builds a wall in 52 days, while someone keeps requesting his presence by letter. He can't leave to meet them because he says that then the work will stop, everyone else must be really lazy.
He was the leader of the effort, not the only one working. He was the focus guy, the prophet, the point man. Although I am sure that there were some lazy people.
So, I read this one today... and it seems to be that this book is set sometime around 400b.c.e. That means that Israel was being released from Persian captivity... a new nation being released into the global scene, that would pressure a lot of kings; Israel's leaders would be high-value targets... The point wasn't so much that he didn't want to leave because the work would stop, but because those peeps were trying to kill him...
